Part Six of "The Lake Between Us"

Gravitational Pull

Ezra AU x Seraphina (plus size OFC)

This fic is for those 18+ MDNI

Word Count: about 1.9k

Warnings: Mentions of all the food (sorry for making you hungry), implied sexual activity, Ezra is a softie, actual adult conversations (the humanity!), Sera and Ezra being sexy and cute (I very much enjoy these two - I'm also biased), two idiots (because they kinda are but it's good - I think)

Summary: Ezra and Seraphina are growing closer fairly quickly. Neither of them view this as a bad thing, but it warrants some conversations and a different kind of dinner.

Notes: Two more parts to go! I made use of a time skip. A good chunk of time passes in the part but it's to show the relationship progression for down the line. There's also two other interludes because of the story flow.

Orbiting around each other for almost two months, it was surprisingly easy to fall into an exchange of their homes. Seraphina had opened hers first, leaving Ezra to do the same with his. Dinners were alternated as well: gumbo, stews, shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles and Ezra’s favorite that Sera made, jambalaya. He was fond of the sausage she used, letting the spices soak throughout the rice. The evenings became longer as they both lingered in each other's abodes.

Seraphina observed his bookshelves, one was filled with different first editions he’s collected over the years and the other had momentos and pictures from his life with Cee. A small child with cornflower hair smiled brightly in most of them as a younger Ezra held her, sometimes reading, other times sitting in a truck as they drove. His dedication to her upbringing was remarkable. He swears up and down it was just a promise he had to uphold.

“I keep my honor intact in areas where it matters most in life my dear Moonbeam. That is all it was and is.”

He can’t hide the small smile that appears each time he looks at her graduation photo. Nor does the gentleman hide how often his hands find their way to her hands, arms, and back. Not that his Moonbeam ever appeared to mind.

There were nights where Ezra would allow Sera to reveal different stories from career. He found it fascinating that a person could remain in the same profession for ten years. The changes she describes and the different facilities she’d worked in. The witnessed suffering, knowing there was little to be done for the patient or their family. The treatment of those in her profession and those associated with it. The physicality of what it means to perform different tasks and the skill it took.

Another two months of dinners brought the two of them closer together, learning about each other. Studying their bodies and sounds. There were times they parted, back across the lake, but oftentimes the nightly partners remained intertwined among limbs and sheets. Still having a drink before bed but not nearly as many. They were dulling each other's edges, making it easier to slip into their dreams.

There were occasions when they laid awake, wordless as the radiance of the moonlight draped both of their forms; they did wonder if they were awake or asleep. It felt like such a pleasant notion to have someone who understands by your side.

Ezra got a call that Cee was coming back down with her girlfriend Zora on a short break between the summer sessions. They would be in around four in the afternoon. He was supposed to have dinner again with Seraphina, it’s become a near nightly staple, even when she’d have her shifts at the hospital. Ezra had told her to turn on the back porch light if she was willing to have company. Sera always made sure it was turned on after she got home and showered. Even if she fell asleep on the couch sitting next to him, she always thanked him for coming after curling up next to Ezra.

While cooking for tonight’s dinner, the gentleman decided to make a bit more food. While putting some rolls in the oven, he called Seraphina to let her know.

“Good afternoon Sundrop. How is the day treating you?” A familiar giggle is heard over the phone, she’d told him that she’d be out part of the day with her mother. He heard her mother in the background asking if that’s ’the handsome man with the good ass gumbo’ Ezra maybe poked fun at Sera about that a bit, even after making the matriarch his bread pudding two weeks ago. Sera’s mother still called him that or ‘skilled with his hands.’

“Well. I’m going to finish shopping with her and take her home. Then I’ll be on my way back. How are things on your end?” Sera’s mother pinched her cheek and laughed, taking the bags with her. She put them in the car. He smiled, knowing that her mother likely did something to make her yell, “Ma!”

“Sundrop. Cee called and said that her and her girlfriend are popping down for about a week between their sessions. I’m going to pick them up and they’ll come back to the house.” Ezra set the timer for his rolls and checked his shrimp, still sautéing in the frying pan, not quite as brown as he would like.

“Alright. Did you want me to come and meet her? Or did you just want to spend time with Cee yourself?” Curious, what his answer would be and also to meet the fabled Cee. Ezra’s pride and source of joy. Was there room for her in his world? Or maybe not yet, it might be too soon.

“My dear, I don’t want to pressure you into meeting her. There will be other opportunities.” Ezra added some more butter, onions, peppers and some seasoning to the shrimp. “However, I am making plenty of food for you to join us tonight. If you wish.” Silence for a moment too long he feels. Things are too ambiguous. “Sera, it’s fine if-“

“I want to meet her, she’s important to you.” Sera’s mother protested being taken home wanting to eavesdrop a bit more, “I’ll call you again after I drop her off.”

“Of course. Talk to you then.”

Their conversation ended for now. It picked up again while Ezra was simmering the grits after finishing the shrimp.

Seraphina knocked on Ezra’s door. He answered in a white tank top, dark green apron and brown cargo shorts. He was barefoot with the fans going, it was too soon to turn the AC on, it was best to save for the nighttime. She walked in and brought chocolate cake she'd baked the night before and a fresh bottle of tequila. Following into the kitchen, Sera set the bottle down and placed a hand on Ezra’s back as he checked his pots.

“You know what’s important to me and that’s family. You were wonderful with my mother and she can be a handful. I don’t want to pressure you either. This is…” Pausing, she loses the words. Does he feel the same way that this is going somewhere? Is it really? They have just been rather casual about things with the exception of him meeting her mother. And maybe Sera mentioning him to her friends. Possibly only on her side she didn’t see it as casual.

Turning the heat down on grits, Ezra faced her head on. She looked up at him with the same honey orbs that held curiosity on the dock that afternoon. Now they held such trepidation. “This is something that’s been foreign to the both of us for quite a long time. A relationship, is it not?” Her flowing yellow dress appeared to glow in the artificial light of his kitchen. His hands found their way to her hips, where they tended to stay. “I would be overjoyed if you met Cee. Then she could put a face to the name of the woman I’ve been spending my time with and who has been helping me to sleep better. Giving me a bit more purpose.” Watching her face as he spoke, Ezra knew he may have said a bit too much, not unusual for him. He usually peppered it with innuendo to lighten things, but this wasn’t the time.

“I suppose you’ll tell me next I shouldn’t have been so wrought with concern.” Pecking his lips to keep it light, the wide smile on her face was evident. “I’m not sure how long we’ll be together like this but I wouldn’t want to be with anyone else.”

“I should hope not. And you had the same concerns I did. I just know what I feel as well. I do hope we’ll be at this for a while yet. You aren’t going to be rid of me, are you Sundrop?” The grin found among Ezra’s patchy beard drew Sera’s hand to it as it had before. Shaking her head, she kisses him again letting herself linger. An arm snakes around her back before he draws his head back to go for her shoulder, he'd rather have her neck or chest. Ezra makes sure to keep in mind that his charge will be here with them for dinner and not leave any marks on her body as he normally does.

“I’d be a fool to let a man like you go, .”

Before Ezra left to pick up Cee and Zora, Seraphina assisted him in cleaning the table before popping back to her house to freshen up a bit further. Both their bodies had become drenched with sweat and they’d need to change clothes. Ezra requested, however, that she not change her underwear and he wouldn’t either. Playfully slapping his arm, before capturing his lips once again, “Such a filthy scoundrel you are.”

“Since I am, will you help make me a new man by allowing me to see all of you again tonight? It can be wherever you like, as always, lady’s choice.” His hand cups her ass and squeezes. Keeping her near the door, not letting her leave quite yet.

“I think maybe I should. Since you’re such an honorable and changed man now. Let me go, I can’t be meeting Cee smelling of-“ Her laugh made him want to hold her longer.

“Neither of them would know anything about that type of smell, I hope. Besides, you smell divine.” Nuzzling into her black poofy tresses, he finally released her. “But if you must go. So be it. Remember my two requests, Sera.”

“I know. They’ll remain. Focus on getting those girls here safely please.”

“I can think of more than one thing at a time. See you back here tonight.”

They parted ways as Ezra tracked to pick Cee and Zora up and Sera washed up and dried out her dress. She’d keep the yellow dress on a bit longer. He was right, it did smell of him, not as strong as when she first came home. Having Ezra scent around her was as much of a comfort as it was a source of arousal. She needs to focus on the former for dinner tonight.

Seraphina was going to meet face to face with the fabled Cee, she was only a little nervous. Little did she know Cee was as well. When was the last time she was this invested in a relationship? Not since college and this one was certainly a lot more healthy. Sera felt she could have worded it better, but she’s been nervous about bringing it up, always was. Per usual, Ezra made her feel like her worrying was totally normal and so was how strongly she felt about him. If he were to pull away from her, she would just hold on tighter, hoping that he would feel the same.

Ezra was humming to a song he hadn’t heard in years, “Day Dreaming.” He laughed because the last few months has felt like consecutive pleasant dreams. He was sure he was aware though. Maybe this is what he should be doing and where he should be. As Ezra drove, he was more sure in comparison to even half an hour ago - even if she fell out of love with him, he would long for her.

Explaining my band dr!

In this reality I'm the frontwoman of Velvet Veil. We have no specific genre, but we experiment with rock, folk, etc.

The band consists of Seraphina Noir (me), Ashton Locke (guitarist and my love interest), Luna Skye (bass) and Ezra Echo (drummer)

We have 5 full band albums. Our debut album was released in 1996, sophmore in 2000, third in 2007, fourth in 2015 and fifth in 2019.

Ash is my main piece, my soulmate, but our relationship is rocky to say the least lol. We're childhood friends, we started dating in '95, broke up '99, had an enemies era, became friends again in 2012, and got back together in 2014.

I wanted this dr to feel like a liminal space and like some indie movie from 1999 that will change your life.

Humans in this reality are both nocturnal and diurnal, and only need 2 hours of sleep, though most people choose to sleep longer.

People have fair working hours, conditions and wages, and companies don’t exploit their workers.

Your powers are a manifestation of your identity but are very subtle.

For example, some people may be extraordinarily good at swimming, almost like a mermaid. Some people may be extremely good at reading other people and are attuned to others’ emotions on a supernatural level.

People’s powers manifest more like hums, vibrations, and auras, subtly influencing the environment around them.

Your powers are increased in community settings (like bands), but at the risk of your powers when alone being weakened.

Time is ambiguous, fluid, and non-linear, but it’s still easy to navigate.

There’s always some type of background music or “soundtrack”, and music is a powerful element and character.

The environment is mercurial, reflecting the emotions and states of people in it.

There are some videogame-like elements, including title cards, voiceovers for fights, unique objects, and levels. (inspired by Scott Pilgrim)

Once you defeat someone in a fight they respawn in their house.

There’s a lot of different means to travel (like the Subspace Highway)

Memories and emotions have a tangible effect and often take on physical forms that you have to defeat or reconcile with.

You can explore your mind in a literal sense.

So basically I got seduced by other fandoms and kinda fell out of FBAWTFT. Then Ezra started their bullshit and I got kinda turned off, and then JKR REALLY leaned into her terfy bullshit and totally turned me off.

It’s kind of difficult to write in the fandom when that kinda shit is going on—and at this point, it’s never going to get better or be apologized for. It’s hard to think about hypaethros and not think ick.

And then of course there’s the usual life bullshit in the way—I’ve actually written 90% of another matchablossom one shot and 60% of a sukufushi multi chap but I just don’t have the time as energy to dedicate to them no matter how much I want to!

Also I got into kpop and kinnporsche and lita. The fandom brain is working overtime in THE WRONG FANDOMS LOL.

(Another shameful part is it’s been so long!! Who’s still reading it? But you are lovely anon! So thank you for asking about it!)

That said, the FBAWTFT fandom was my first posted fic fandom and everyone was so lovely—I do really miss it and I do intend to finish it. The chapter is mostly finished, I just gotta get over the final hump.

In the 10 years of marriage between Mr Credence and Mr Percival Graves, they can count on one hand the number of fights they've had:

When Percival sent Tina on a life-threatening mission, and then promptly sent himself after her.

When Credence got spectacularly drunk and told Seraphina to go fuck herself.

When Percival bought Credence something way too expensive without consulting him—and Credence returned it.

When Credence and Queenie joined a protest against Rappaport's Law, and ended up in jail, needing Percival and Tina to bail them out.

When Percival blew up the stove, tried to fix it himself, and ended up needing to go to the hospital.

What Credence and Percival can appreciate, however, is that playful little arguments have greatly outnumbered any sort of actual fights. And on this particular Monday morning, there's an incessant tapping against their bedroom window. Credence groans, and buries his face back into Percival's neck, ready for a playful argument.

"Credence, darling," Percival murmurs, running his fingers up Credence's arm.

"Percy, dearest," Credence murmurs in return.

"Sweetheart," Percival says, kissing Credence's neck.

"No," Credence laughs. "It's your damn bird."

The pigeon continues tapping furiously. Percival sighs, and heaves himself up out of bed and to the window. He takes the letter from the pigeon, who pecks at his fingers unhappily before it flutters off to roost on the rooftop. Percival getting old and needing glasses for reading. Credence thinks he looks hot. Percival is grumpy about it. He has a designated space in his office for them but they end up in all sorts of places that Credence has to remind him.

When Percival opens the letter in bed, Credence resituated across his lap, Credence can feel his husband stiffen for a second.

"What's wrong?" Credence asks instantly, leaning up on an elbow. "Percival?"

Percival merely blinks, and hands the letter over to Credence. Before Credence can read more than a word, his husband says, "My parents have passed."

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Review - Spoilers

I am very proud to be part of the Potter generation, growing up as the books and films were released. I know my house, wand and patronus, so when the news that there would be another film allowing us to return to the wizarding world I was very excited. However, there were a few worries in the back of my mind: would they contradict any information already given to us? Would they be able to get us to care for characters that we’ve only just met? Would it live up to the phenomenon that is Harry Potter? So I approached “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” with a little trepidation but when the time came for the midnight viewing on a Thursday night with some of my closest friends, and Hedwig’s theme started to play, with the slight twist in the melody, I knew I was hooked once again.

It’s a great start to the film, seeing the back of Grindleward, alerting us to the looming presence of this famous dark wizard. It reminds us that however much fun the film will be there is an underlying darker nature to this new series. I enjoyed the flashes of newspaper articles from around the world, reminding us that even though we have only seen the wizarding world in the UK, there are wizards all over the world. It also allowed us to get an idea of the times that we are in – the 1920s. The soundtrack for this film is brilliant and rivals that of the original Harry Potter series. The interwoven sections of old melodies with the new is great, allowing us to feel as though we’ve already been to this place before.

When we are first introduced to the hero of our new series, Newt comes across instantly as a kind-hearted, loveable and slightly odd character. Eddie Redmayne is brilliant in the role, portraying perfectly how socially awkward Newt is but also how caring, especially towards his creatures, he is. Newt’s blue coat is a brilliant bit of costuming as it shows there is something a bit different about this character, it’s even different to the way the rest of the wizarding world dress, being such a bright colour in contrast to the darker colours used for the majority of the cast. On the boat we get to see him stroking his case and trying to calm down whatever creature, Doogle as he calls it, is inside. The clasp unbuckling itself a couple of times in Newt’s first few scenes are a nice touch as a forewarning of what chaos is to come.

Newt’s arrival at customs is a lovely scene but there is a little tension. He is obviously a little nervous when talking to the customs officer, especially when he asks to look in the case. However, magic saves the day with a very nifty “Muggle Worthy” switch to change whatever is in the case to show some of Newt’s belongings. This includes an old fashioned Hufflepuff scarf. I’m so glad that the filmmakers have gone in the direction to show us some notable characters from other houses. In the Harry Potter series, we had some great characters that were not in Gryffindor, such as Luna and Cedric, but our Golden Trio were all in the house of scarlet and gold. Most of my friends are proud Hufflepuffs and it’s nice for them that they are starting to get just as much great merchandise to show off their house pride as us Gryffindors. For casual fans of the Harry Potter series, there has tended to be a thought that Gryffindor is the only notable house so it is brilliant that we die-hard fans can prove them wrong with such a kind and brave character as Newt.

The scene at the bank is a great introduction to some of our other main characters. Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston) is trying to look inconspicuous whilst standing in the middle of a crowd listening to a woman, Mary Lou (Samantha Morton) preach that all the mysterious events occurring in New York are due to witches living among them. Newt arrives to listen to Mary Lou, then sets his case down. A slightly flustered man, Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), bustles into the crowd, bumping into Newt’s case. This draws attention to Newt and Mary Lou homes in on him. The next few lines are some of my favourite in the film. You can tell Newt feels quite smug with himself. Mary Lou asks Newt if he is a seeker and Newt replies “I’m more of a chaser really”. It’s a lovely way to incorporate something to do with Quidditch and made even funnier with how oblivious all the Muggles are to this reference. We are also introduced to Credence (Ezra Miller) who seems a very sad and scared young man who we can’t help feeling instantly sorry for. Ezra Miller does a fantastic job as the beaten down character.

We are quite quickly introduced to our first fantastic beast – the Niffler. The design of the Niffler was just as I imagined in when I first read J.K.Rowling’s description in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. He is just as mischievous and fond of shiny things as described and it was a lovely moment to finally see something that I had only imagined. I love all the scenes which involve Newt trying to catch his Niffler and the bank scene is no different. It is made all the funnier with Tina following Newt with confused looks from her and other patrons at the odd behaviour of this man. I particularly love Newt’s looks of disapproval towards Niffler as he tries to collect a gold bar from the bank vault and later as he tries to stay inconspicuous to Newt in the jewellery shop.

The lines in this film are brilliant. They range from very funny, Jacob’s confusion “I was there, now I’m here” after Newt disapparates with him being a great example, to nods to the world that we have already learnt about, such as spells we watch Harry and his friends learn, and even to slightly more thought provoking ones. One of which is a line my friend and I always say to one another during exams “Worrying means you suffer twice”. I love this quote as it is so true and definitely a mantra to live by.

When Tina refers to Jacob as a No-Maj, we are all a little confused just as Newt is. It makes sense though that throughout the world there would be different names for people with no magic. I liked how Newt didn’t start calling them No-Maj’s but continued with Muggle as that would have been what he grew up calling them. There could have been a temptation to have our hero start referring to Muggles in the American way since he was in New York but I was glad they kept the distinction between the two countries.

Seeing the MACUSA building is a great way to introduce us to the difference within the wizarding world. Here we meet Percival Graves (Colin Farrell), the Senior Auror and Seraphina Piquery (Carmen Ejogo), Madam President (the equivalent of the Minister for Magic in the UK). They are discussing the threat of Grindleward when Tina interrupts with Newt. We learn here that Tina used to be an auror but has been demoted to a position in wand permits. Graves seems fond of Tina, most likely from being a mentor to her. This, however later on, doesn’t stop him sentencing her and Newt to death on false terms.

On meeting Tina’s sister Queenie, we can tell that, just like Newt, she is slightly different to the rest of the magical world. Also like Newt and his blue coat, she has a coat of a very bright shade of pink. Queenie is a very kind character, who is quietly a very powerful witch, which we can tell after being told she is a legilimens (can read minds), a skill that only very powerful and talented witches and wizards can master. The magical community in America is very different to that in the UK, such that they don’t allow any interactions between themselves and Muggles. This is something that Newt and we, the audience, find very strange but Queenie shows us that not every witch or wizard in America feels the same way as we get to see her develop strong feelings for the Muggle Jacob. I particularly love the relationship between the two sisters, especially when hearing Queenie talk so proudly of her sister Tina being a career woman.

The wait to finally see inside Newt’s case was definitely worth it, the sight is absolutely breath-taking. This is the perfect time to talk about the special effects in this film. They are utterly outstanding. Being able to create very life-like creatures using VFX software is very impressive. The whole segment with the creatures is brilliant and you really get the feeling at just how fantastic this world that has been created it. Even the smallest of details, such as those creatures that are only in the background are superb and allow us to be completely immersed in the wonder of such strange creatures. Newt’s scene with the Thunderbird Frank was heart-warming and reminded me so much of the scene in Prisoner of Azkaban when Harry meets Buckbeak. The names that have been given to some of the creatures are brilliant and so obscure. We have Frank the Thunderbird, Pickett the Bowtruckle and Doogle the Demiguise. Newt cares very deeply for all his creatures, as shown that he carries Pickett around in his coat pocket because he has a slight cold. I think their relationship is one of the closest that Newt has with one of his creatures, close enough that some of the other Bowtruckles accuse him of favouritism.

A truly hilarious part of this film is Newt’s Erumpent mating dance. I have no idea how Eddie Redmayne would have been able to keep a straight face. It doesn’t matter how many times I see that scene; it always has me laughing out loud.

We get to hear a bit more about Newt’s background when he, Jacob and Tina are in front of all the leaders of each magical community. We learn that Newt has a brother, who is a war hero, and we get the sense that Newt has always been in his brother’s shadow. We also learn in his interrogation with Graves, that he was expelled from Hogwarts, due to an incident with a magical creature, but Albus Dumbledore was the only teacher that fought his corner. What actually happened has not been fully explained to us yet but I think it has something to do with Leta Lestrange and it wouldn’t surprise me if Newt had taken the fall for something that she had done. It was heart-breaking hearing Newt shout in pain at the thought of them hurting his creatures and hearing him insisting that none were harmful as they dragged him away, was painful.

The filmmakers did a great job at having us believe that the child, and as we later find out is an Obscurus, Graves was so intent on finding was the younger sister of Credence, Modesty. This was done via the editing where we would swap from a scene with Credance and Graves to one where Modesty was present. We saw that there was a bond there between the two siblings and since all we knew of Obscurus’ was they couldn’t live past the age of ten. So when the big twist in the film is revealed, the audience is left stunned that it was Credence all along. I definitely believe that Credence survived and I hope we get to see him again in the upcoming films.

The other big reveal in the film, is that Graves was not who we thought he was. In fact, he was Grindleward all along. This was a great twist and has made me quite excited about the story to come. The twist did clear up some of the earlier scenes such as Graves giving Credence a Deathly Hallows sign and why Graves was so intent on finding the Obscurus. The only thing that I’m unsure about with this film is the casting of Johnny Depp as Grindleward. On the whole I associate him in comedic roles such as Captain Jack Sparrow and, personally, I don’t think that sort of character would work for one of the most powerful dark wizards of all time. However, I will not write this casting off and I only hope that my concerns will not come true.

The final scene for our four heroes to be together is very emotional as they say goodbye to Jacob, who has to be obliviated. It was nice that Newt told him that he considered Jacob his friend. But the truly heart wrenching moment was after a final kiss from Queenie, Jacob opens his eyes, and his friends have been removed from his memory and we see that the antics that occurred over the past days is all forgotten. It was a lovely touch that Newt gave Jacob the Occumy shells to act as collateral to allow him to open up his bakery, also being quite fitting that their final meeting was a parallel to that of their first; them bumping into one another and switching cases. Newt and Tina’s goodbye is very sweet and gives us a glimpse of a potential romance to come between these great characters. The ending to this film is very uplifting and brightened all of our hearts after so many goodbyes. Finally seeing Jacob succeeding in his dream, by conjuring up baked goods in the designs of Newts creatures. They leave us suspecting that, maybe due to Jacob’s long exposure to magic, he may subconsciously remember more than the normal Muggle would and when seeing Queenie, we can only hope all these wonderful memories will return to him.

To sum up, I absolutely loved this film, with its instantly likeable characters, amazing special effects and a great story line, it definitely holds its own against the Harry Potter series. I could even say I have preferred this film to the Harry Potter ones, as there was nothing for me to compare it to and so it didn’t allow me to feel disappointed with the exclusion of any of my pre-existing favourite scenes and characters. It has been a wonderful introduction to the new wizarding world franchise, characters and time. I can’t wait for the next films to come out and will definitely be enjoying them once again at the midnight showing with my friends.

Part Seven of "The Lake Between Us"

Merging Star Clusters

Ezra AU x Seraphina (plus size OFC)

Word Count: 1252

Warnings: surprisingly none! 😄

Summary: Ezra's got all his favorite ladies in one place. Seraphina and Cee finally meet.

Notes: Usually, Nerdie brings the family drama, but for Ezra (and my last slivers of sanity), I left that alone this time. This fic is easy, like Sunday morning or whenever you happen to read this.

Cee noted that something was different about her guardian when he stood next to his truck to pick her and Zoe up. He of course took their suitcases like always and brought them in for hugs, never judging her for her choice of partner. Some days, she thought he preferred she was with a woman, she remembered him always telling her “never fully trust anyone even me, but especially men. Leave them alone as long as possible.” She’d been pretty sure he was saying that because he was her father figure as most of them seemed to she heard from her friends. That said, he looked brighter, like he actually slept and put a bit of his weight back on. Cee would never be foolish enough to tell him that last part. Ezra tended to gather it around his belly which despite never mentioning it, she knew he was sensitive about it. She was waiting for him to mention it first. The reason for his positive change. They had spoken about the person in question for the first time a few months ago but only in depth a few weeks ago.

Zora, Cee’s girlfriend of the past year, was never one to mince words or be delicate. Cee appreciated her directness but also her kindness as she was never rude with questions of comments. “So Mr. Wordsmith, this lady friend of yours, is she just that or your partner in you looking like a million dollars?” Ezra had grown accustomed to Zora’s nicknames for his expansive vocabulary and he chuckled at her question as he turned down the main road that led to his home. About twenty more minutes now.

“She has become an essential fixture in my days and nights, so yes my partner.” Answering in a matter of fact manner without a full paragraph had Cee and Zora look at each other through his rear view mirror as Cee was sitting upfront.

“I’m still in shock. She’s got to be an angel or something.” Zora exclaimed, patting Ezra’s shoulders to which he continued to smile.

“Did you not tell Zora her name Cee?” Ezra asked with a raised eyebrow. Zora furrowed her brow at the blonde who appeared in thought.

“Wait, I thought I had. Her name is-“

“Seraphina. My lovely lady’s name is Seraphina.” Ezra hummed. Both women shivered.

“Please don’t say her name like that in front of us like that again. Save that for her.” Cee looked out the window, grinning. He’s smitten, the man who told her never to trust anyone is smitten.

“Never expected you to find an actual angel Mr. Ezra. Though I guess if anyone was, it would be you. You did find that 1st edition copy of ‘Love Poems’ by Nikki Giovanni for my twentieth birthday. Didn’t think one existed anymore.” Zora leaned forward and gave him a kiss on the cheek as they pulled into the driveway and parked his truck. She hopped out along with Cee. Ezra went to grab their suitcases as the front door opened.

A woman clad in a yellow sundress with a bright smile and coiled hair up in a ponytail atop her head her copper skin shimmered from the humidity forming on her skin. She was wearing a bright fuschia lipstick on her full lips and wore blue rimmed glasses. She gave a small wave to which Cee and Zora matched. Ezra climbed the stairs and set the bags down to peck her lips then embrace her. The two young women collectively made an “ooo!”

“These two uncouth creatins are Zora and Cee. Despite their teasing, they are excited to meet you. They’re mainly having fun at my expense, not yours Sundrop.” His smile nearly hurt, it was from ear to ear. The women that made his life brighter were all gathered here under one roof. Was it alright that he felt this happy? That his nightmares weren’t as frequent? With everyone making their way into his home, he watched as Cee went to the kitchen with Sera and they hugged, rocking back and forth as Sera often did with her own family. Did that mean Seraphina saw Cee as part of her family? Wait…were the two of them family now? Shaking his head, he felt he may be getting ahead of himself.

Sundrop had already set the table while Ezra had been out. They just poured water and sweet tea and sat down together at the table. Eating and laughing all night, they asked each other questions. Eventually, Cee and Seraphina ended up outside on the porch to chat. They sat side by side, chuckling at how enamored both Zora and Ezra were with the books on the shelves.

“I sometimes think she’s more of his charge than I am.” Cee laughs as Ezra and Zora are seen through the window exchanging some heightened words over a hardcover book. Their hands are moving back and forth, both excited and likely talking a mile a minute.

“I can see why he took a liking to her. They’re discussing those volumes with quite the fervor.” Sera commenced and Cee nodded. She smiled at Sera.

“I can also see why he’s taken a liking to you. Just sitting with you is pretty relaxing. He looks a hell of a lot better than the last time I saw him.” Seraphina laughed and Cee gasped, “Ah sorry. I sometimes-”

“I know. Ezra told me. I don’t mind. I know he doesn’t like it. He’s not out here is he?” Sera chuckled and Cee relaxed again. Thankfully she was the same as she had been around the dinner table. Personable and kind. “We’ve helped each other. He’s got quite a few layers but they’re warm.” Seraphina then looked out over the water. Cee followed her eyes and peered at the lake too.

“I’ve never heard him described like that, but also you’re the only woman I’ve seen him bring to his house to meet me.”

“That’s…” Sera pressed her hands together and looked over at Cee. She knew things had become more serious between the two of them. The significance wasn’t lost on her. It fell in line with Ezra meeting her mother and subsequently her brothers at a family dinner. Her father met Ezra later that night after his part time job. “I suppose a lot has happened between us.

“In any case, it’s good for him. He doesn’t do well when he’s idle. He’ll say he’s just fine but-”

“That’s when the very bad ideas start and even longer than normal prose starts and never stops?” Seraphina and Cee laugh on that one as Zora exits the back door with Ezra holding a book of poems by Robert Frost.

“Can you believe he won’t let me borrow this?” Zora appears to be distraught, while Ezra’s arms are crossed defensively.

“The condition of the Langston Hughes poems speaks volumes to your treatment and care of books. I’ll not have the pages of my collection bent, ripped or stained.” Ezra argued. Cee and Seraphina watched as they bickered a bit more and ushered them inside the house.

Eventually, they simmered down and agreed that Zora could read it while staying at Ezra’s home and wouldn’t need to be supervised. Cee and Zora slept in Birdie’s old bedroom while Sera and Ezra retired to his. The soft taps of the wind on the sides of the house and the croaks of the crickets lulled them all to sleep for the night.
